Belmont: War of Will becoming horse racing's hero after Preakness

In this oddest of Triple Crown seasons, something as routine as pinpointing a winner and loser hasn't been easy. There's still much to digest, much disagreement and controversy, fights in court and a suspension.

But racing is best when it has that horse the sports public can get behind.

This time of year — especially this year — racing needs a horse that has appeal for the right reasons beyond the usual parameters of the sport, a horse casual fans of the sport want to watch and root for in the Belmont Stakes, the third of its three most high-profile annual races.

And it appears that horse has now emerged in War of Will.

War of Will's Preakness victory after a troubled Kentucky Derby trip was certainly timely and no doubt impressive. Yet trainer Mark Casse's horse is becoming a celebrity for one reason: because Casse and owner Gary Barber made a wise decision in continuing to run him in Triple Crown races when others of similar appeal have not.

Opinion: With a Maximum Security win, there would have been no controversy

One of the unplanned results of a controversial Kentucky Derby was that it moved horse racing to the front of the American sports conversation for a short time, spurring interest in ways that even a Triple Crown winner hasn't been able to do in recent years.

But that created a void for that one horse to capture and thrive in the additional interest of this year's crazy Triple Crown picture. By continuing to run, War of Will is filling that void and helping the sport when it was needed the most.

It could have been Maximum Security.

Really, it probably should have been Maximum Security.

His connections, however, didn't pursue the final two legs of the Triple Crown, and in doing so, they are missing a golden opportunity of capitalizing on attention that doesn't come along very often in horse racing.

The horse's health is paramount, of course, and there was likely a worthy and understandable reason to sit him out of the Preakness only two weeks after being "beat up" in the Derby, as trainer Jason Servis told the Daily Racing Form. That shouldn't be viewed as sour grapes.

But War of Will was involved in that same contact if not more in the Derby, and he had actually sustained a minor injury prior to it. He nonetheless ran back two weeks after the Derby and proved himself much the best at Pimlico, being sharp enough to beat a bunch of rested new shooters.

More: Along with racetrack deaths, horse racing now has another fear: slaughterhouses

Given that, why couldn't Maximum Security run in the Belmont on five weeks' rest when he is now back exercising? Again, to be fair, there are perhaps health-related reasons we don't know about, but it's still a shame that he's not trying.

The public wants to see War of Will and Maximum Security on the track together to settle this. And it wants to see it at the Belmont.

Yes, there is a big difference between seeing a rematch in a Triple Crown race or down the line somewhere else. If Maximum Security goes on to win the Haskell or the Travers or even a Breeders' Cup race, horse racing fans will be buzzing. But the general sports public that doesn't usually follow horse racing won't notice or care — not like it would, at least, if it happened in a Triple Crown race.

That's just a reality of this sport. The spring window for undivided attention is small and it is closing soon.

Meanwhile, it would have been an easy decision for War of Will's connections to rest on that Preakness win and not want to perhaps diminish the accomplishment with a poor showing at Belmont against a field likely to feature capable, fresh Derby runners such as Tacitus.

But credit them for understanding the importance of fans being able to see War of Will run again in a huge moment.

That's why the legacy of the 2019 Triple Crown season, without him winning the actual Triple Crown or even the Kentucky Derby, just might belong to War of Will. If he wins the Belmont, in 10 years they won't just remember Maximum Security was disqualified as the winner of the 2019 Kentucky Derby.

They'll remember he was disqualified after impeding the path of a horse who could have gone on to win the Triple Crown.

Who's best?: After Preakness result, horse racing needs to settle it on the racetrack

Another horse dies at Santa Anita; 26 racehorse deaths since Dec. 26

ARCADIA, Calif. (FOX 11) - Another racehorse has been euthanized at Santa Anita Park, the 26th horse death at Santa Anita since the track's racing season opened on Dec. 26.

Kochees, a 9-year-old gelding, was put down Sunday after suffering a leg injury during a race the previous day, the track confirmed.

He is the third horse to die at the Arcadia facility within the past nine days, after several weeks without a fatality.

Kochees was running in his 49th race, a $10,000 claiming race over 5 1/2 furlongs, when he was pulled up by jockey Mario Gutierrez while entering the top of the stretch, according to the Los Angeles Times, which was first to report the death.

The newspaper reported that the horse was taken off the course in a van and left overnight in his stall with a splint on his injured leg in the hope of stabilizing his condition. Surgeons reportedly weighed an operation, but discovered the horse had lost blood flow to the leg and the decision wasmade to euthanize.

Mike Willman, Santa Anita's director of publicity, confirmed the details, said, "every effort was made to save the animal."

A group of animal rights activists protested outside the park Sunday morning, before news broke of the latest fatality. Later, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals released the following statement from Senior Vice President Kathy Guillermo:

"Santa Anita and all California tracks must suspend racing until the ongoing investigation by the district attorney is complete and the new rules have been strengthened. Decreasing the number of broken bones is not enough. PETA and Social Compassion in Legislation are currently working with The Stronach Group and the California Horse Racing Board to enact new regulations and laws to stop all deaths. Nothing short of a zero-fatality rate is acceptable."

Los Angeles County District Attorney Jackie Lacey last month announced the creation of a task force to investigate the deaths of the horses at the track.

In a letter to the California Horse Racing Board on April 2, California Sen. Dianne Feinstein called for racing to be suspended at the track "until the cause or causes of these deaths can be fully investigated."

On May 18, an unraced 3-year-old gelding named Commander Coil suffered a fatal shoulder injury while galloping during training. His death was the first since March 31.

"Equine shoulder injuries are rare, especially for a horse that is galloping as opposed to breezing or racing," according to a statement from The Stronach Group, which owns Santa Anita. "A comprehensive evaluation will be completed to understand what might have caused this uncommon injury."

On Sunday May 19, Spectacular Music, a 3-year-old gelding, sustained a pelvic injury while running his first career race and was put down.

"The Stronach Group remains committed to operating Santa Anita Park with stringent protocols that prioritize the health and safety of horses and riders first and foremost," the statement said.

Santa Anita was closed to racing for most of March while authorities studied the racing surface for possible causes contributing to the deaths. Some observers have speculated that this year's unusual level of rain is playing a role in the fatalities. Santa Anita's owners brought in national experts to conduct days of testing on the track's soil, but no problems were found.

Races resumed after the state horse racing board approved a series of safety measures, including limits on certain types of medications administered to horses.

In early April, Santa Anita officials announced a series of new measures to help bolster the safety of horses at the track, including restrictions on certain medications, requiring trainers to get permission in advance before putting a horse through a workout and investing in diagnostic equipment to aid in the early detection of pre-existing conditions.

Preakness 2019: Full Results, Analysis and Video Highlights from Pimlico Race

War of WillPatrick Semansky/Associated Press

For the second straight Triple Crown race, the final turn made the difference. This time around at the 2019 Preakness Stakes, however, War of Will earned a place on the victorious side.

The Mark E. Casse-trained horse surged past Warrior's Charge on the homestretch and sprinted to a winning time of 1:54.34.

War of Will handed both Casse and jockey Tyler Gaffalione their first-ever Triple Crown victories and posted the fastest Preakness time in 12 years. The triumph also served as redemption after Maximum Security impeded War of Will at the Kentucky Derby.

Everfast, Owendale, Warrior's Charge and Laughing Fox followed War of Will across the finish to round out the top five.

Race Highlights

Preakness Recap

War of Will earned a place in history as the race winner. But in today's era of viral videos, Bodexpress became a legend.

Moments after the gate open, Bodexpress threw John Velazquez―a four-time Triple Crown-winning jockey―from his perch.

"When the doors opened, I was off right from the start. He kind of jumped sideways," Velazquez said, per ESPN. "I had my feet out of the irons, so I lost my balance then, I went off."

Fortunately, the 47-year-old Velazquez was unharmed. Bodexpress ran the entire race without the jockey and ended up galloping a second lap around Pimlico Race Course, too.

Yes, the main story was elsewhere.

As he did at the Kentucky Derby two weeks prior, War of Will started on the rail. The colt trailed the leading group for the entire race, sitting behind Warrior's Charge and the remainder of the leading group. On the final turn, War of Will burst through an opening on the inside and outraced the field.

Warrior's Charge faded late, dropping to fourth while longshot Everfast and Owendale battled for the second-place finish. Everfast ultimately edged Owendale at the line.

Race favorite Improbable never seriously threatened for the victory, potentially because he reared in the gate.

"When he did that in the gate, I knew that was it," said trainer Bob Baffert, per Nathan Ruiz of the Baltimore Sun. Baffert's pursuit of a record eighth Preakness win must wait another year.

War of Will might not be finished yet in 2019, though.

"He's great this morning," said Casse the morning after the Preakness win, per Claire Crosby of Bloodhorse. "I would say there's an extremely good shot we'll be there (in the Belmont)."

PETA sides with Santa Anita on new horse racing safety rules

"NYRA has implemented extensive reforms and made significant investments in recent years to modernize track surface analysis, upgrade facilities and provide our veterinary team with the independent authority and resources required to properly monitor thoroughbred health and welfare," said Pat McKenna, NYRA director of communications. "These efforts have yielded meaningful results and led to demonstrably safer racing operations at Aqueduct Racetrack, Belmont Park and Saratoga Racecourse."

Preakness results: Who won the 2019 Preakness Stakes? Full order & highlights from the race

Two weeks ago, War of Will was at the center of one of the Kentucky Derby's largest controversies. After it appeared as though Maximum Security had won the race, a steward's inquiry determined that Maximum Security impeded War of Will, and as a result Maximum Security was disqualified. On Saturday, War of Will captured all of the glory that eluded him 14 days prior by winning the 144th running of the Preakness Stakes.

War of Will started in the unfavorable No. 1 post position but successfully navigated the rail to close down Warrior's Charge, who had been leading much of the race, and take first position on the final turn en route to capturing the second leg of the Triple Crown at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore. It was jockey Tyler Gaffalione's first win in a Triple Crown race.

The bulk of the drama occured at the post; first, race favorite Improbable reared before the gates were opened, and then Bodexpress reared at the start. Bodexpress threw jockey John Velazquez from his mount. Bodexpress went on to race without a jockey but never affected any of the other 12 horses.

Improbable, trained by Bob Baffert, finished a disapointing sixth after a fourth-place finish in the Kentucky Derby. Baffert was looking to become the first trainer to win the Preakness eight times.

Kentucky Derby winner Country House did not compete in the race because of a virus. This was the first Preakness since 1996 that the Kentucky Derby champion was absent from the race.

Preakness Results 2019: Twitter Reaction to 144th Race from Pimlico

Mike Stewart/Associated Press

After a controversy-fueled finish to the Kentucky Derby, there was less drama deciding the winner of the 2019 Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore on Saturday.

War of Will earned the victory in the 144th running of the event.

The colt started on the rail but quickly fell behind Warrior's Charge, Market King, Anothertwistafate and Alwaysmining. The order basically stayed the same down the backstretch, and Warrior's Charge emerged from the final turn up front.

But that's where War of Will made his charge.

Tyler Gaffalione rode the colt to the Preakness victory, outracing Warrior's Charge while holding off late surges from second- and third-place finishers Everfast and Owendale.

But you couldn't be faulted for losing focus; Bodexpress stole the attention of many viewers at the moment the race started.

Why? He threw off the jockey.

During a post-race interview on NBC, Bodexpress rider―well, momentarily, at least―John Velazquez said the horse wasn't behaving well in the gate. Though the Hall of Fame jockey didn't mention it, the starter seemingly had a hold on Bodexpress.

Perhaps it might not have ultimately affected War of Will's triumph, but Velazquez simply never had a chance Saturday.

Though disappointing for the team, some viewers will more likely remember Bodexpress' solo ride than War of Will's win.

Everfast—who had morning-line odds of 50-1, per TwinSpires—raced to second and brought a bit of a financial boon.

However, race favorite Improbable bucked in the gate and was never much of a contender during the race. A victory would've given Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert a record eighth win at the Preakness Stakes, but Improbable finished sixth.

Instead, the praise went to War of Will, Gaffalione and trainer Mark Casse, who secured his first-ever Triple Crown victory.

2019 Preakness Stakes odds: Race-day betting lines, favorites, sleepers

If you didn't tune into the 144th running of the Preakness Stakes on Saturday because there were no Triple Crown implications, you missed one of the craziest moments in a long time.

Bodexpress, in the No. 9 stall at Pimlico Race Course, was loaded in crooked, and when the gates opened, he came out wrong, immediately throwing Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez to the track.

While Velazquez was on the ground, Bodexpress kept running and ended up completing the race, although the 20-1 shot officially received a "did not finish" designation.

After the race, which War of Will won, NBC Sports' Kenny Rice caught up with Velazquez and asked him what happened.

"He was not behaving good in the gate, he was not settling really well," the jockey said. "He got me against the wall in the gate, and obviously, when the doors opened, I was off right from the start and he jumped sideways, and I had my feet out and I lost my balance and I went off."

Despite being thrown from Bodeexpress, Velazquez said he was fine.

"I'm good, to tell you the truth," he said. "Just disappointed when you come here to a big race like this and things like this happen with the horse. Just disappointed."

War of Will had the second-best odds going into the race at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore.

Country House, the horse that won the Kentucky Derby after Maximum Security was disqualified, pulled out of the second leg of the Triple Crown because of a cough. Maximum Security did not run the race.

Here are the payout results from the 144th running of the Preakness Stakes.

Racing! It’s Preakness Day

Hello, my name is John Cherwa and welcome back to our horse racing newsletter as Santa Anita's unprecedented run of safety comes to an end.

Everyone knew it was going to happen, it was just a matter of when. After almost 7,000 timed workouts and races, Santa Anita suffered another horse fatality on Friday when Commander Coil broke down with a shoulder injury and was euthanized during morning training.

While everyone knows the only acceptable number of fatalities is zero, it was remarkable that Santa Anita went six weeks without a death. Now, the horse population is down and the number of races has been reduced, but statistically speaking it was a run that was every bit as startling as 23 deaths between Dec. 26 and March 31.

Santa Anita, and the industry, would like to look at it as the first death in six weeks. Others will look at it as No. 24.

There was also a death at Pimlico, probably a heart attack after the end of a stakes race. Here's a wrapu p of both incidents. Just click here.

Also, you might be interested in a story about what Bob Baffert thinks about Improbable's chances in Preakness. Just click here.

It's Preakness Day at crumbling Pimlico Race Course. Friday's highlight: There was no running water in part of the facility, the part the media was located.

Now, let's take one spin around the barns as we head into the 144th running of the Preakness Stakes. The quotes are courtesy of the Pimlico notes crew. (They get to the barns at 6 a.m. on the day before the big race, so I don't have to. So, thanks.)

--Alwaysmining: Jockey Daniel Centeno on keeping the ride aboard the horse that has won six in a row. "I've been fortunate to ride some nice horses. I won two Tampa Bay Derbys with nice horses that went to the Triple Crown races, but it's part of the business. Sometimes they want somebody with experience and I never had the experience. I'm really lucky and blessed that they let me stay on [Alwaysmining]. He's a nice, cool horse to ride. He's very professional."

--Anotertwistafate: Trainer Blaine Wright on what to expect. "Our plan is to keep his face clear and adapt to what's going on to the outside of us. I think we're in a terrific spot. We'll meet with our jock (Jose Ortiz) [Saturday] and get his take on things. He knows these horses probably a little bit better than we do as he's ridden against them. It will be interesting to see what he thinks."

--Bodexpress: Trainer Gustavo Delgado on Friday's work. "We took him to the starting gate and he galloped. Everything was good."

--Bourbon War: Trainer Mark Hennig on an equipment change. "When I look back and watch some of his races, he's great at relaxing and shutting off and waiting for the jock. But the reins weren't tight for the jock, so when the jock asked him it seemed to take him three or four jumps to get into that good stride. I thought maybe with the short-cup bli nkers, it would get him a little more on the bridle – not necessarily to get him closer to the pace but to get him more on the bridle."

--Everfast: Tammy Fox, assistant to trainer Dale Romans, talking about Friday's work. "He did everything good, he was smart," she said. "As long as they don't act stupid, it's all good."

--Improbable: Baffert on Friday's work. "He looked good. Got the thumbs up from the rider. All's well."

--Laughing Fox: The colt schooled in the starting gate and then galloped for 1 ¼ miles.

--Market King: Trainer Wayne Lukas borrowed Baffert's exercise rider Humberto Gomez and here's what Wayne had to say. "He said he likes my horse. My horse is good, It was just a routine gallop."

--Signalman: Trainer Kenny McPeek on the race distance. "I'd like to see him run back to his 2-year-old form (5-2-2-1), but we'll just have [jockey] Brian [Hernandez, Jr.] get him out there and go from there. I do think t he added distance (1 3/16 miles) works for him. He should like it."

--Warrior's Charge: Owner Marshall Gramm on supplementing his horse into this race. "Once we saw Maximum Security out and saw a lot of those Derby horses fall by the wayside, we thought it's worth the gamble ($150,000) in terms of the supplement. I think we'll be up front. Hopefully, the pace won't be too fast and we'll be able to be right up among the leaders if not on the lead. And as they turn for home, hopefully we kick away and see if they can catch us." (Note: Warrior's Charge is trained by Brad Cox, who also trains Owendale.)

--War of Will: Trainer Mark Casse had the colt jog a mile with exercise rider Kim Carroll, the usual pre-race routine.

--Win Win Win: Trainer Michael Trombetta on Friday's training. "All went well this morning, a gallop around the track and everything looks good."

Last word on Saez suspension

Some of you emailed to point out that the len gth of Luis Saez suspension (15 days) for his ride on Maximum Security was due to previous violations. That is so true, it was his third violation for careless riding. But the point I did not make very well was that the stewards knew it would result in a 15-day suspension and gave it to him in a race in which many believe he did nothing wrong.

No stakes on Friday's Santa Anita card so we have to turn to a $67,000 allowance for 3-year-old fillies going five furlongs on the turf to find the feature race. It was won in devastating off-the-pace performance by Holly Hundy under the guidance of Kent Desormeaux. The winning margin was 2 ¾ lengths.

"The best horse usually wins on grass, but not by two or three lengths," trainer Vladimir Cerin told Mike Willman of Santa Anita. "Kent says she relaxes real nice, so we'll see how she does going two turns."

Holly Hundy paid $6.80, $4.00 and $3.60. Cavernndchipmunks finished second and Devils Dance was third. Ca vernnchipmunks was ridden by Flavien Prat. If this were a normal Preakness, he would have been on his way to Baltimore to ride Couontry House in the Preakness. But, not so this year with the colt skipping the race because of sickness.

Desormeaux took his horse four wide to win driving away in the stretch.

"There were about four of them that were pretty aggressive, so I said, 'See ya'll later, I hope," Desormeaux said. "She'll definitely go two turns. She relaxes like an all-star."

Santa Anita has a 10-race Preakness Day card starting at noon. The field sizes are pretty good, there are five turf races, one Grade 3 stakes race and three allowances. The feature is the Grade 3 $100,000 Lazaro Barrera Stakes for 3-year-olds going seven furlongs. The big question is why don't they shorten the name of the race to the "Laz Barrera Stakes," since that's how he was known to, well, almost everyone?

The favorite is one of Baffert's one-time Derby trail contenders: Mucho Gusto. At 4-5 he is the favorite. He's three-of-five lifetime and has never been off the board. He was second behind Improbable in the Los Alamitos Futurity and third in the Sunland Derby. This race obviously shortens him up. Joe Talamo is the rider.

The second favorite, at 5-2, is Sparky Ville for Jeff Bonde and Victor Espinoza, who will be his fourth jockey in his last four starts. He is three-of-nine lifetime and won the San Vicente, the big early-in-the-meet seven-furlong race. The post is around 4:30 p.m., or after the Preakness Stakes.

Here are the field sizes, in order: 10, 9, 6, 8, 12 (2 also eligible), 11, 9, 10, 14, 10 (4 ae).

Ciaran Thornton's SA pick of the day

RACE THREE: No. 6 Left Alone (3-1)

Left Alone travels down from Golden Gate off two straight wins since moving to the US. The horse previously raced on turf in the UK so today's surface is no problem. Had a best of the day workout before shipping down here and races protected today, both big reasons to be confident here. Trainer Manuel Badilla is 26% winner last race and the jockey Irving Orozco, who rides for the 1st time, travelled down to ride for this trainer whom he is 5 of 8 for a 63% win rate. They mean business today.

Friday's result: Another big winner for us as Morgan S. romped home at 8-1 paying a handsome price of $18.80.

SEVENTH RACE: No. 5 Harem Bar Cartel (5-2)

This sophomore colt looked solid when working alone from the gate with a nice 18.0 clocking April 20 while preparing for first start since November. He was quick early and displayed nice stride under hand ride while drifting inward. He ran well fresh in Oregon debut victory last year and doesn't catch the strongest field for the non-winners-of-three level. Three of his five rivals finished less than a neck apart in their last race which was captured by a 13-1 outsider.

Kentucky Derby 2019 payouts: Win, place, show results for 145th race

Maximum Security entered the 145th running of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs as a 9/2 favorite, and he was able to hold off Country House to win the biggest race of the year.

Or so we thought.

As he made the final turn Saturday, Maximum Security veered out of his lane and bumped Country House. After Maximum Security crossed the finish line No. 1, the race was reviewed. Stewards then determined that Maximum Security impeded other horses' progress, and the horse therefore was disqualified.

Here are the payouts for the 145th running of the Kentucky Derby.

Country House: Win ($132.40), Place ($56.60), Show ($24.60)Code of Honor: Place ($15.20), Show ($9.80)Tacitus: Show ($5.60)

Country House's payouts were high because he entered the race at 65-1 odds.

Grab your oversized hats that you'll only wear once, and get ready for the 145th annual Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs in Louisville.

A little birdie told me that the Derby is difficult to handicap, but it was particularly challenging this year, with the scratches of Omaha Beach, who was considered to be the favorite, and Haikal before Saturday's race.

But we move on. So, here are the updated betting lines, from best odds to the worst, from Sportsline on Derby Day:

Maximum Security: 9/2Improbable: 5/1Tacitus: 5/1Game Winner: 6/1Roadster: 10/1Code of Honor: 13/1By My Standards: 15/1Win Win Win: 15/1War of Will: 17/1Vekoma: 22/1Cutting Humor: 24/1Gray Magician: 31/1Tax: 35/1Long Range Toddy: 49/1Spinoff: 50/1Master Fencer: 52/1Plus Que Parfait: 55/1Country House: 62/1Bodexpress: 99/1

You can watch the Derby on NBC at 6:50 p.m. ET/3:50 p.m. PT, with coverage beginning at 2:30 p.m. ET/11:30 a.m. PT on NBC Sports, the NBC Sports app and NBCSports.com.

The 145th Kentucky Derby might be the most exciting two minutes in sports, but there will be plenty of other horse racing Saturday at Churchill Downs.

The Derby is the 12th of 14 races scheduled at the iconic venue, with the first starting at 7:30 a.m. PT. That might be a bit early for watch parties here on the West Coast, but you will have plenty of opportunities to whet your horse-racing whistle before the main event begins at 3:50 p.m. PT/6:50 p.m. ET.

Pre-race television coverage begins on NBCSN at 9 a.m. PT/noon ET, then shifts to NBC at 11:30 a.m. PT/2:30 p.m. ET. You can stream NBC's coverage of the 145th Kentucky Derby live on NBCSports.com and on the NBC Sports app.
